About US

Historic and Modern

Dating back to 1438, the historic Cathedral Gate Hotel is located in the heart of Canterbury. The front of the 3 star hotel overlooks the Burgate and the rear has spectacular views of the Canterbury Cathedral.

Guests who are looking for something different will enjoy the hotel’s beamed ceilings, sloping floors and crooked doors. Whilst retaining its historic features, the Cathedral Gate Hotel offers all the modern facilities the discerning modern traveler expects.

The hotel has a small library, a lounge and a bar where guests can relax after a day of sightseeing. Complimentary tea and coffee are served throughout the day. Still or sparkling water is available from our water machine.

OUR HISTORY

A brief glimpse into the hotel's past...

Hospitality to travellers has long been a tradition on this site, dating from the time of Ethelred the Unready (866-871). The site of this building is referred to in Anglo Saxon deeds and was built in 1438 by the Priory as the Sonne hospice. It has belonged to Canterbury Cathedral for at least a 1000 years.

Between 1510 and 1517 the west end of the building was altered by the erection of the Christchurch Gate (known as the Cathedral Gate). Some of the buttressing for the Gate utilized the existing back wall of the hotel.

In 1539 the Sonne hospice was leased by the Priory and the monks of the Cathedral to a member of the public Mr Thomas Gylham for 13/4d per annum. It is believed the hospice then became a resting place for pilgrims visiting the holy site and has remained accommodation for travelers to Canterbury ever since.

WHAT OUR GUESTS SAY

It was really great to return to the Cathedral Gate, post lockdown and I am glad to say that it was as good as ever with spotless rooms and facilities. It was great to see Landlady Debbie again and receptionist Monica as well as a new member of staff a really nice young lady from Portugal. The continental breakfast is the best anywhere. Its location beside the Cathedral is unbeatable. Highly recommended!

Wonderful hotel and they got us out of a pickle after a mix up with another hotel booking… beautifully clean rooms, great service that went way and beyond and lovely fresh fruit breakfast and warm and fresh croissants were yummy. Great central location and loved watching the swallows flying from the roof terrace in the morning too.

We absolutely loved our stay, our room was very cute overlooking the Cathedral and we loved the welcome note giving the history of the property. The staff couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful, Rob gave some great recommendations as did Monica and we were made to feel completely at home! The location is fantastic, right in the centre of Canterbury. Breakfast was lovely. Would highly recommend!

Perfect located for a trip to Canterbury. Really didn't want to promote this hotel as I want it all to myself 😃. Our reception was warm and friendly. Everything was covered about Covid. The room was spotless very good bed (serenity) plenty of space for two people. A lounge and also an outdoor seating area is wonderful. The continental breakfast is superb although the two dining areas are covid friendly. Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone.

Our stay at Cathedral Gate exceeded our expectations. We only stayed for one night but it was more than enough for us to rest and enjoy the beautiful view of the Cathedral out the window (despite the scaffolding). The staff were all very friendly and made us feel safe and comfortable, as all Covid measures were strictly followed and the premises were spotless and extremely sanitised. We were warmly welcomed and were offered complimentary wine as well. Our breakfast was provided in our room as requested, and everything was delicious and carefully prepared.
